center city renaissance

Source: (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/13490895.htm)

That's an opinion shared by an army of out-of-towners, recent college graduates, and suburban empty-nesters who are swelling Center City's population and remaking its neighborhoods.

Consider the following:

Though Philadelphia as a whole is still losing residents, Center City has the third-largest downtown population after New York and Chicago. Since 2000, its population has increased 11.5 percent, from 78,902 to 88,000. Experts say it could reach 96,000 to 105,000 by 2010.

Retail occupancy in Center City is now at 90 percent - 3 percent higher than 2004. This year, the Urban Land Institute listed Center City among the nation's top 10 for urban retailing.

By year's end, says a November report by the Center City District, 8,235 new housing units - new construction and condominium conversions of older buildings - will have been completed since 1997. By 2008, an additional 3,574 will be done - with 7,204 more proposed.

i really like it down here. i feel safer in center city at 1am than i do at 9pm in the northeast. there's always something going on and everything is nearby. if you work down here, you don't even need a car. besides rent, it's not as expensive as everybody thinks it is.

i'm going to look for a more permanent condo home down here in 2006.

NEW DEVELOPMENT?

Arrested Development fans may soon have reason to smile: Both ABC and Showtime have expressed interest in picking up the apparently doomed Fox series. The networks involved wouldn't comment, but media analyst Stacey Lynn Koerner thinks the show's best bet is ABC. "It has a large promotional base and stable of shows," she says. "On Showtime, the audience wouldn't even be as large as it was on Fox." A post-cancellation pick-up turned JAG into a hit in 1997 when CBS took it over from NBC. It could work here, too.

working on something

on what?

a program to keep track of what work pants and shirts i have in my closet. and which shirts go with which pants.

and a simulation of how many times a year i would wear each article so i can determine the expected wear/tear. and then i can figure out how much of each type of item i need.

too many clothes = too much money and too much investment into the "current" style.
too few clothes = clothes get worn/torn much faster.

i think this problem can be solved through pure brutal german mathematic calculus.

peter jackson could've easily cut 45 minutes from this movie and made it earn 9/10 instead of 7/10 from me. instead, we get 45 minutes of peter jackson wanking with his lotr oscar statues. other than that, it was good except for jack black's overacting.

it took me a nearly 6 hour final push but i've finally finished advance wars: ds.

overall verdict on the campaign: b+.

i felt that a lot of the final missions were gimmicky. capture these in 24 turns, etc. it wasn't overly difficult. i'll have to try some of the war room stuff, which i feel is where the bread+buffer is refridgerated.

Also according to the-op.com's board someone has been informed that the show will get to air up to its tenth episode and then the remaining three will go out on the DVD set. I hope this isn't true but I won't be surprised if it is.

Fox benched the criminally low-rated for the duration of November sweeps, and last month cut back the season order from 22 to 13 episodes. The news came after eight shows were already in the can, leaving production just five new episodes to wrap up the Bluth family saga.

At least on Fox. Producer Brian Grazer told CNN last week that he is working feverishly to move the sitcom to another home.

"I think we'll get picked up by some other network, possibly," he said. "You never know.

"I can't tell you anything other than I'm hoping it works out in the way that we want it to. But I'm optimistic."

very interesting

Source: (http://www.seedmagazine.com/news/2005/11/the_other_id.php?page=1)

Don Wise, professor emeritus of geosciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is the nation's foremost proponent of ID. No, Wise isn't getting ready to testify on behalf of the school board in Dover, PA. Rather, he advocates for a different version of the acronym: "incompetent design."

Wise cites serious flaws in the systems of the human body as evidence that design in the universe exhibits not an obvious source of, but a sore lack of, intelligence. Seed asked him to chat about his theory, reactions he's received to it, and the anthem he penned to rally people to his cause.

So is there intelligence in the design?

Yes! No, no there isn't. The thing that perhaps is closest to all of us is our own skeleton, and there are certainly all kinds of stupidity in our design. No self-respecting engineering student would make the kinds of dumb mistakes that are built into us.

All of our pelvises slope forward for convenient knuckle-dragging, like all the other great apes. And the only reason you stand erect is because of this incredible sharp bend at the base of your spine, which is either evolution's way of modifying something or else it's just a design that would flunk a first-year engineering student.

Look at the teeth in your mouth. Basically, most of us have too many teeth for the size of our mouth. Well, is this evolution flattening a mammalian muzzle and jamming it into a face or is it a design that couldn't count accurately above 20?

Look at the bones in your face. They're the same as the other mammals' but they're just squashed and contorted by jamming the jaw into a face with your brain expanding over it, so the potential drainage system in there is so convoluted that no plumber would admit to having done it!
So is this evolution or is this plain stupid design?

"As someone with poorly aligned teeth, a bad knee, and sinus problems, I feel that this man speaks my language."

checking in at 1.5 miles to work

Source: (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/)

septa strike, day 1

(aka halloween)

well today sucked. i woke up an hour early at 7:30am. there has been no hot water in my building since last night. for what i pay to live here, i fully expected emergency water heaters and a swat team bodyguards out front this morning. but no, that did not happen.

today, i thought it would be funny if i wore a full suit to work today. because i wanted to be a professional for halloween. because i wanted to be a manager for halloween. because i wanted to be within the dress code for once.

so i donned my suit and left my apartment at roughly 9:30 to walk from 19th street to 38th street. let me tell you that the comedy gold of wearing a suit today turned into comedy pyrite at about 31st street. i'm not doing that again in those shoes. but my halloween joke went over really well so i'm happy about that.

i would also like to point out that every crosswalk was hazardous to pedestrians. there's a fight at every light between turning cars and pedestrians. i thought i was going to die out there.

Source: (http://www.slate.com/id/2128758/?nav=tap3)

Throughout the public evisceration of Harriet Miers, even her critics have tended to concede one of President Bush's main claims: Miers couldn't have been a complete loser to rise to the top of the bar and of her law firm.

Wrong.

Well, to be fair, a complete loser would have had to stretch to win election as president of her local and state bar associations. And loser perhaps isn't the word for the typical law firm managing partner back in Miers' era.

Mediocritythat's a better word for it.

i love slate because they have no sacred cows.

We drove to the ER, and the receptionist managed to keep a straight face when I told her that I had woken my parents up, and gone to the hospital because a spider had crawled into my ear. So I sat in the lobby for awhile. Every now and then, the thing would burrow deeper. It felt exactly like you'd imagine it would.

Then the nurse came to get me. My mom came with, since she didn't want to miss whatever happened, and we followed her into the sick room. The nurse took my temperature, checked my blood pressure, and went to wake up the doctor.

The doctor came in, obviously still half asleep, introduced himself, and asked me how I was doing. I said "Well I have a spider in my ear."

"Really? Truthfully, you really have a spider in your ear?"

"Yeah."

"I don't like spiders. I'll pour something in your ear to numb you and kill it."

He left, and came back with a syringe, full of what looked just like water. He squirted that into my ear, then used that weird looking glowy thing doctors use to check out what was going on in there. He said he definitely saw something, but didn't think it was a spider. So he got the nurse, and went back to bed.

The nurse used a syringe with a really long end to flush out what she said just looked like a big piece of wax. After doing this about 5 times, I began to think that maybe I had just gone crazy. Then this fucker came out:

I was expecting a tiny little spider. This thing is about the size of a small pea.

So now I'm going back to bed. It still feels like it's in there.

It will feel like it's in there for awhile, but that's just until the eggs hatch. Then you'll be fine.

Seriously, though, I work in a children's ER, and we see bugs in ears quite often. Most often, though, it's cockroaches. Sometimes, the child is so small, and the roach that comes out is so large, I wonder how it's possible. We're plum in the middle of the ghetto, so I assume that's why it's most often roaches. The roaches we have at the hospital are absurdly huge, so I can only imagine what's crawling around in the homes surrounding us.

About a year ago, a kiddo came in crying and screaming, and the mother was all nonchalant, deadpan; "a roach crawled up in his ear". We got it out, still alive, when we saw another surprise: another live roach underneath it. Not one, but two had crawled in, while he was asleep. We couldn't seem to get it out, only managing to pull off it's back half.

We had to send him home, with half a roach in his ear and an appointment the next afternoon to have it removed surgically.

My boss had this happen to him, but he didn't know it was there - it must have crawled in while he was asleep and had set up home in there. Whenever it wriggled it messed with his balance and made him fall over. After a week or so of this he went to the doctors and they looked in and saw the spider, so they got some tweezers and pulled it out. Then they went in again and very carefully pulled out the white egg sac that could have caused god knows how much fun if it had been left behind.

Yummy.

Thirteen-year-old twins Lamb and Lynx Gaede have one album out, another on the way, a music video, and lots of fans.

They may remind you another famous pair of singers, the Olsen Twins, and the girls say they like that. But unlike the Olsens, who built a media empire on their fun-loving, squeaky-clean image, Lamb and Lynx are cultivating a much darker personna. They are white nationalists and use their talents to preach a message of hate.

Known as "Prussian Blue" a nod to their German heritage and bright blue eyes the girls from Bakersfield, Calif., have been performing songs about white nationalism before all-white crowds since they were nine.

this is why we can't have nice things.

it's pretty cool. internet telephony. pretty good voice quality. free internet to internet calling. you can pay a small fee for a real phone number assignment that people can dial to call you (about $30 a year) and voicemail service. you can also pay a small fee to make outgoing calls to real phone numbers (2 cents a minute, which isn't bad). it's like a pay-as-you-go service to replace a voice landline if you have one.

ankle status

the purple discoloration on the outside of the ankle is starting to disappear. one random purple bruise showed up last friday though on the inside of my ankle. that's strange.

i'm a little bit stronger but i'm really slow on stairs. i can't wear my sketchers to work either; they're heavy and they dig into my ankle a little bit. back to ignoring the dress code at work this week! :)

it sucks that this healing is not fast at all. i'm feel pretty fortunate that i didn't rupture anything in the hours and days following though.

i think i might start up physical therapy/rehab for my ankle at the drexel sports medicine center. if i want to continue running, which i do, i'll need to strengthen what's left of my ankle or else i'll be really prone to frequent ankle injuries in the future.

people ask me if i would do it again. no. no, sir, i would not.

:(

i did the parkway race this morning. let me recap.

in the first quarter mile, everything was slow and i tried to get to the edges so i can sprint up. well, i forgot the first rule of running and that is to keep your eyes on the road. while sprinting up, i got caught in a little pothole and took a tumble. cut up my left knee and sprained my right ankle pretty badly. i couldn't get up until two other runners helped me to the curb. i took a few seconds to collect myself and then started running again trying to keep pace. 3 miles on a bad ankle and a bloody knee. my mechanics were all messed up and had to really pound it to get it keep my locomotion going. it was pretty stupid to keep running but i don't think i made it any worse. adam finished two minutes ahead of me. once i finished and started walking, i realized how bad this was.

this was probably my last race for the next 6 weeks.

first mile, 10:30.

no surprise

Source: (http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/09/23/life.evolution.reut/index.html)

But the American public appears to back the school district.

At least 31 states are taking steps to teach alternatives to evolution. A CBS poll last November found 65 percent of Americans favor teaching creationism as well as evolution while 37 percent want creationism taught instead of evolution.

Fifty-five percent of Americans believe God created humans in their present form, the poll found.

it's because people, for the most part, are stupid. we are not objective thinkers. we are biased. we are racist. we are misinformed. we are afraid of change. we are so easily manipulated. and we need to be protected from ourselves.

and this is the reason why most "democratic" governments are not full democracies but rather partial representative democracies. why do we, the people, elect people into the electoral college to vote for us? why do we have a system where we, the people, do not directly elect supreme court justices?

because if we simply let a mob of people run this shit based simply on a majority vote, we would be fucked big time. because i don't see any reason why the "every home in america should be provided with hdtv and an air conditioner" bill wouldn't pass. imagine the "let's decide what to teach our children based on a majority vote" curriculum would include terrel owens, wheel of fortune, suv maintenance, and lottery tickets. when the majority chooses nonsense, the rest of us has to deal with it. because the stupids outnumber the critical thinkers by a whole lot and i'm seeing it more and more everyday.

note: when not-smart people say the smart people are arrogant and shit, well, there's a reason why and it's because they've earned it.

Moving quickly to fill the vacancy left by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist's death, President Bush on Monday nominated Judge John Roberts to the nation's top judicial post.

how can you possibly nominate the new guy be the chief justice? that's like if at work, the new guy straight from college gets hired to be the new department head over the guys who've got dozens of years of seniority and experience.

you're supposed to give it to the most senior person or the best leader. not the new guy. that's a slap on the face to every justice.

the unspoken protocol

there is an unspoken, but widely understood, protocol that when you go to a gym, you are trying to best the person next to you. lift more than them. run faster than them. show off your physical prowess, even if you have to hurt yourself in the process. even more so if there are desireable persons in the same room, you are flairing your feathers. you are always competing with the person next to you whether you want to or not; the gym is a social ritual of genital measurement.

i walked into the gym today knowing this with intent to smoke the shit out of the person on the adjacent treadmill.

i got stuck on the middle treadmill with a hot girl on my left and a big muscle guy on my right. i had something to prove. i could not win against the muscle guy in a bout of fisticuffs, but hell, i'll take him in a sprint down the parkway. i hear this talent is cherished by hot girls somewhere in the world where this is a serious occupation. but here, i was going to flair my feathers.

i had a cheesesteak and a snickers bar today. i was ready to rock. amazing how fast the predator has turned into the prey.

six miles per hour at 1.0 incline. i brought my 'a' game and was moving along at six point one miles per hour at 2.5 incline after warming up. yes, my friends, i went six point one. this is not a petty thing per se, because i pace myself at a sustained six one on inclines. and even then, my incline was like 250% of his.

but wait, i looked at her screen and she was rocking along at seven and half miles per hour at no incline.

oh.

then she started doing sustained sprints at nine and a half miles per hour. let me break this down for you: that's pretty close to a 6 minute mile. that's an incredible pace. that's a pace that professionals run. like professionals in a part of the world where this is a serious occupation.

oh.

well, she certainly displaced more water volume than i did today.

p.s. all of this was exaggerated for your entertainment. but i still got totally smoked by the girl.

let's talk about kitchen essentials

here is a short list that any "supreme cuisine" kitchen cannot do without:

  • splatter guard: must-have if you do a lot of frying and you don't want oil on all of your kitchen surfaces afterwards.
  • marindes: so important. worchester sauce, chinese marinades, thousand island dressing, cumen, garlic powder, bbq sauce, chili sauce.
  • herbs and spices: if you are just starting out, get a basic spice bundle.
  • black pepper grinder: freshly-ground black pepper is awesome.
  • lots of kosher salt
  • meat thermometer: must-have for oven work. especially one with a long probe that you can use outside of the oven.
  • lots of tin foil

aftermath

so i walked down the parkway a little bit to take a look at the aftermath and i'm pretty surprised. it was clean. it was like there was no music festival yesterday. the city did an excellent job cleaning up the place.

yesterday, i was wearing sandals and was afraid i was going to get cooties on my feet from all the trash. (i did see several used condoms in the parkway. ewww.)

Saturday, July 2, 2005

yeah so live 8

so i got in to see the tail end of it. by the time i got in, most of the people were leaving. i think most of the people left after the amazing linkin park/jay-z set.

it was amazing. it was like a sea of sweaty under-30 humanity. philly was on its best behavior. they definitely trashed the shit out of the parkway though. afterwards, we went to fado bar/restaurant and hung out.

i'm wondering where we put the usual parkway homeless. maybe we chloroformed them last night and dropped them off in trenton.

all in all, i don't think this concert will do much politically. you're stupid if you think we can eradicate poverty in the african continent when we can't do it here. noble, but ultimately naive.

edit: not racist.

pretreat your meat

i cannot stress this enough: marinate your meats before you grill them. i'm not talking about for like 5 or 10 minutes either. i'm talking at least an hour. you want your chicken/beef to soak in those flavors and keep them trapped inside during the grilling process. make sure you marinate all sides for even flavor.

these are my favorites:
beef - worchester sauce
chicken - trader joe's chinese marinade + italian seasoning

also acceptable is soy sauce + pinch of salt + lots of garlic powder. i also like bbq sauce as a marinade.

this is what i like to do:
put your meat in a bowl, add in marinade, use your hands to mix and evenly coat, let sit for 20-30 minutes, then move to the fridge for the remaining hour.

i like to think the meat soaks up the marinade and then is locked in during the refridgerator phase.

let's jog down the parkway on saturday.... oh shi

Source: (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/entertainment/special_packages/live8/)

shit. i hope my building is barb-wired and management will hand out rifles saturday morning to defend the entrances.

i guess i'll probably stop by to see what's going on. i mean, how cannot i? i'm practically there. i know some friends are counting on me... i mean, my apartment, as home base for certain bon jovi expeditions. for this, i have stocked the booze cabinet.

also, on july 3rd, the minibosses will be in town. that's right, the minibosses. $10 at the first unitarian church down the block.

july 4th, i fully intend to check out the fireworks on the parkway.

if you can read this and not afraid of sunlight, you are welcome to join any of the festivities.

new category

in this category, i will be talking about cooking and how my cuisine reigns supreme.

allez cuisine, bitch.

i hate it when it rains

before living here, i used to think that a heavy downpour on center city was sort of poetic. like nature or some benevolent force rinsing down the streets of sin and scum and stuff.

now i fucking hate it.

especially in the summer with the heat and the humidity. do you know what humidity is? humidity is water vapor in the air. do you know what rides along in the humidity? smells.

septa vehicles and the people aboard them smell like wet dogs. the trolley station smells like urine and homeless people (there is likely correlation there). the streets smell like garbage juice. you know, the juice that leaks from garbage trucks when they compact. don't forget the exotic liquids that restaurants dump into the streets. the rain and heat reactivates the juice. the humidity carries it.

and this weather amplifies the homeless people smell. listen, i'm compassionate about their situation: i hook them up donuts or whatever from wawa occassionally. but i wish the city authorized a fire engine dedicated to roaming the streets and spraying down homeless people with soapy water. spray the shit out of them.

so i cut work last thursday a few hours early to see batman begins. all in all, if you're a fan of the dark night returns animated series, then you would love this movie. it follows the animated series/comic word for word.

christian bale was a great batman and everybody else did well in their roles (caine, neeson, freeman, holmes, oldman). the only negative about the movie is that the action scenes were cut like a mtv music video. way too fast and rapid.

There is unrest on Planet Foxborough. Many of its inhabitants fear the Patriot Federation will be overthrown after a long, prosperous reign over the galaxy. The mysteries of the turbulence can be explained only by the wise Coach Yodachick, who has been through hundreds of wars.

Master Yodachick, does keeping the Federation together at this point represent a challenge greater than any other?

Great every challenge has been, my Padawan. One is not more imposing than the other. Change is constant. Come and go, senators do. Come and go, warriors do.

And what of those who remain?

Find new ways to invigorate the minds of our Jedi, we must.

peter king and his homoerotic fan fiction:

After the game, the man who now has to be mentioned with the great coaches of all time, Bill Belichick, met Brady in a dank hallway outside the Patriots locker room and embraced him like a long-lost son. This was a terrific game for Belichick as well, gets credit for more than just the head-coaching victory here. Belichick, who spent the season doubling as New England's offensive coordinator after Charlie Weis ascended to Notre Dame last year was tonight's MVAC -- Most Valuable Assistant Coach -- after calling two gutsy touchdown plays in the fourth quarter that led the Patriots back from a 17-16 deficit with 14 minutes to play.

"You're the best quarterback I've ever seen,'' Belichick said in Brady's ear.

i swear to god i thought the next paragraph was going to lead back into the locker room and then chicka bow wow...

rice

after getting my haircut after work, i stopped by the chung may food market to pick up a 25 pound bag of rice. of course, having never bought a bag of rice before, i had no idea what i was doing. nevertheless, for $12, i was the proud new owner of a lot of rice.

i figure i'll catch the 48 bus on arch street to the apt. oh but the gods chortled and the 48 went rumbling by a block away. and the skies darkened and the clouds hung low. and so it was destiny that i walked 7 blocks down arch street hefting a 25 pound bag of rice.

oh the looks you get from people when you're walking down the street with a big bag of rice in your arms. it's cool when you're in chinatown. you get the nod of approval from the old people because they know you're taking care of business, etc.

but the second you leave chinatown, i got some weird looks. what? these are my groceries. 25 pounds of it. this is what i eat. this is what my people eat. it's not like i'm giving you dirty looks when you're hefting 25 pounds of frozen dinner or buckets of fried chicken. it's not like i'm walking down the street with 25 pounds of vaseline and plastic wrap.

anyway, i made it home before it started to rain.

with my precious precious white gold.

5k

well i finished the 5k this morning. it was an interesting experience. imagine a sea of tens of thousands of runners/walkers. then imagine running through and with it. first, me and adam couldn't fight our way closer than a block from the starting line. second, we spent most of the first mile in a mild jog. it wasn't until the beginning of the second mile that it opened up a lot. third, i abruptly cut a lot of people off the way i was running through the crowds. fourth, i spent a lot of a energy bursting and sprinting through the crowds early in the race. at the 2.5 mile mark, i went looking for my mushroom boosts and i couldn't find it. :(

my personal time was about 29 minutes, which i guess is ok for this run. i think i could've taken at least 2 or 3 minutes off of it though.

i think i'll run another one in a month or so.

did you ever have an awful dream where you wake up in the middle of the night? you kind of wake up, turn over, and then fall back asleep. sometimes, you fall back into the same dream that woke you up.

but me? no.

i go back to sleep and i'm like "ok, this dream is now about... the beach." and there i am at the beach. sometimes elements from my first dream creep over into this new dream though. like the lifeguard is a zombie with red shorts and a zinc nose. it's interesting.

i've never had a night before though where i would be chased from dream to dream. like eternal sunshine or something.

ok, this dream is now about... playing football.

ok, this dream is now about... friends from college.

ok, this dream is now about... sitting in the park on a sunday.

ok, this dream is now about... me dreaming about falling asleep.

ok, this dream is now about... me dreaming about me dreaming about falling asleep.

An award-winning festival favorite, this surreal Hungarian odyssey through Budapest's sinister subway system is a thrillingly fast-paced black comedy delight.

Rapidly becoming The Little Cult Movie That Could, the Hungarian black comedy Kontroll has amazed festival audiences from Toronto to Cannes, where it won the Prix de la Jeunesse award (the film has also won awards at fests in Copenhagen, Warsaw and Chicago!). How does an independent directorial debut set entirely within the bowels of Budapest's subway system become such an international sensation? For starters, by being one of the most exciting and ingenious genre hybrids to come along in quite some time: imagine a seedy but pulse-pounding fusion of Jim Jarmusch and Run Lola Run infused with a peculiarly Eastern European mordant wit, and you would be about halfway there. Writer-director Nimrod Antal's film unfolds exclusively in Budapest's subways and subterranean stations, focusing on a group of ragged ticket attendants routinely assigned the city's worst routes. Weary Bulcsu (Sandor Csanyi) leads the group, as they patrol the underground and routinely battle with belligerent passengers . . . though Bulcsu is more interested in the beautiful, enigmatic young woman who rides the rails clad in a bear suit. But soon Bulcsu has more grave concerns: a hooded killer is stalking the subway lines, murdering passengers by pushing them in front of trains. A feast of pure heady cinematic energy and pokerfaced humor, Kontroll's reputation as an international crowd-pleaser is only bound to expand with its screenings here. (Hungarian with English subtitles) -- Travis Crawford

it's like good will hunting but not as good. it's like clerks sorta but not as good. it's like an overhyped movie but not as good. very disappointingly boring.

it's just blah and unremarkable. maybe i don't get hungarian humor. or filmmaking. 7.1/10.0.

film festival: oldboy

Source: (http://imdb.com/title/tt0364569/)

copy and paste:

This jaw-dropping revenge thriller from the director of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance took home the Cannes festival's Grand Prix award.

Oldboy is the ultimate Danger After Dark film. Astonishing in its inventive visual approach and merciless in its shocking narrative trajectory, this new film from Park Chan-wook (whose previous work Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance took this festival's Jury Award for Best Film two years ago) is the pinnacle of international genre cinema. Apparently Quentin Tarantino and his Cannes fest jury agreed: they gave Oldboy the Grand Prix award. Every scene in Park's film contains surprises, yet they are integrated into a fully conceptualized whole, and one is left floored by the degree of creativity on display. Adapted from a Japanese manga, the story is a neo-noir revenge thriller that plays like Prisoner of Zenda filtered through post-Fight Club sensibilities: family man Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is abducted and imprisoned by unknown forces, held captive without explanation for fifteen years. Upon his eventual release, Dae-su must reintegrate into a world now unfamiliar to him and learn why he was mysteriously incarcerated for so many years. With the help of a young woman he meets, Mido (Gang Hye-jung), Dae-su traces his torment to the wealthy Woo-jin (Yoo Ji-tae) but Dae-su can't recall ever wronging, or even knowing, Woo-jin. Yet there is a connection between the two men and the worst is yet to come. Park is at the peak of his game with Oldboy, and the results are unparalleled. To paraphrase an old Tarantino statement: to just say that Park knows how to make a good thriller is like saying Michelangelo knows how to paint a ceiling. Essential. (Korean with English subtitles) -- Travis Crawford

awesomeness++. this was one fucked up movie that stays with you long after you leave the theater. very gruelsome not for the faint hearted. a lot of omgwtf.

wonderful direction and cinematography. the 'hammer fight' scene stands out because it was one long amazing continous panning shot. just awesome.

film festival: arahan

Source: (http://www.arahan.co.kr/)

copy+paste:

Adrenaline-pumping contemporary urban martial arts eye-candy from Korea, as a bullied young cop discovers he is actually a secret ch'i master.

With a slam-bang visual style that's every bit as exciting and hyper-kinetic as the movie's gravity-defying martial arts sequences, Arahan is action cinema as pure adrenaline rush yet the film is also quite clever and funny, lending it a degree of warmth and wit that elevates it above similar turbo-charged genre offerings. Director Ryoo Seung-wan always finds the humor within the film's non-stop barrage of impressive action setpieces, and this gives Arahan an additional layer of charm amidst the admittedly stellar fights and special effects on display. Bullied and frustrated Seoul beat cop Sang-hwan falls for the beautiful, mysterious Eui-jin, who seems to possess extraordinary martial arts abilities. Soon Eui-jin's mentors, the elderly Seven Masters, inform Sang-hwan that he too is actually a destined ch'i master with hidden abilities that can be brought out through training. Partially to get closer to Eui-jin, Sang-hwan takes up training with them and, after initial setbacks, he soon finds himself able to leap great heights, shoot ch'i energy from his palms, and perform other astonishing feats that confirm his position as a new master . . . and just in time, as a renegade exiled master has returned to wreak evil havoc unless Sang-hwan and Eui-jin can stop him. Old-school purists be damned: Arahan is a wirework and CGI effects spectacle all the way, but the results are exhilarating fun. Asiaphile critic Tony Rayns compared director Ryoo's style on Arahan to Evil Dead-turned-Spiderman auteur Sam Raimi, and the analogy is apt: both keep the action moving at breakneck speed, and both are driven to deliver maximum entertainment for your moviegoing buck. (Korean with English subtitles) -- Travis Crawford

film festival text:

An enigmatic mystery that follows a tormented car accident survivor haunted by visions of murder, this dreamlike thriller is a challenging audience puzzle.

You may be completely seduced by it, or you may be completely confounded (or, more than likely, both), but at the very least, it's unlikely you've seen anything quite like the boldly experimental thriller Spider Forest. Director Song Il-gon follows up his acclaimed 2001 debut Flower Island with this strange, mesmerizing mystery that presents the fragmented remnants of one man's violent, tragic past as puzzle pieces that each audience member must collate and interpret. The result is a complex meditation on memory and grief that plays like an Asian ghost story as filtered through Alain Robbe-Grillet. Regaining consciousness following an auto accident, television news producer Min (Kam Woo-sung) tells his police detective friend that a couple was murdered in the forest where Min's crash occurred. There are indeed two bodies there . . . but what else does Min's disjointed memory recall? As his recollections gradually come back, Min reflects back on why he originally journeyed to that cottage in the woods, and how this relates to his wife's earlier death, a demise that Min foresaw in a vision. Are these events of a supernatural origin, or just psychological torment located entirely within Min's mind? Or both? As the mystery unravels, writer-director Song layers on additional narrative density and possible interpretations; Korean shockers like A Tale of Two Sisters look positively linear by comparison. This visually arresting thriller explores how loss and grief can shape one's consciousness, and its intricacies will leave you discussing and debating for days. (Korean with English subtitles) -- Travis Crawford

quick film festival thoughts

i wish i had an all access badge. this waiting in line business is not for me. i got to murderball twenty minutes before it started and there was a huge half-block line.

i ended up walking from 2nd to 19th street last night after survive style 5+ at 12:30am or so because the 21 bus decided to stop running. it wasn't that bad. not really dangerous.

the film festival crowd is mostly college students, old people, hipsters, japanophiles, and movie nerds. interesting blend.

i got some looks from people when i wore my iron chef shirt to the survive style movie. i was not trying to make a statement. this was purely a laundry and clothing availability logistics situation. unlike those battle royale tshirt losers.

stolen copy from philly fests:

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at this year's Sundance Film Festival, this gripping film spends two years following the highly successful U.S. Paralympics rugby team on the road to the games in Athens.

Murderball, the former name given to quad rugby, is a highly competitive sport, played by men with keen minds and healthy egos, in supreme physical shape. They are all quadriplegics. All have lost the use of their legs and have limited use of their arms due to traumatic accidents and illnesses, but what they can control works perfectly. The testimony given by these guys is as frank as it gets: they relish talking about their prolific sex lives and enjoy comparing innovative lovemaking techniques. They play the game like gladiators in awesome, Mad Max-styled custom wheelchairs. Players get slammed hard, bounce out of their chairs, and quickly get righted and strapped back in. There is no time to feel sorry for oneself. This documentary has everything: thrilling competitions, grueling practices, hot romances, family melodrama, complicated lifelong friendships, hilarious moments and some of the most memorable characters in this year's festival. The rivalry that ensues between top-ranked Team USA (and its Captain, the scrappy Mark Zupan) and former team star Joe Soares, now the uber-demanding Coach of Team Canada, is exquisitely suspenseful. The matches are breathtaking, with exhilarating point-of-view shots filmed by cameras mounted on the chairs, and the material is expertly assembled by stylish, award-winning editing from Geoffrey Richman (formerly of Elkins Park) and Conor O'Neill. (English and Swedish with English subtitles) -- Jennifer Steinberg

awesome movie. this is a movie that everybody should watch and they'll be better for it. very entertaining and satisfying. the core of the movie was the stories of how these players lost the use of their legs and coped and adapted. i was expecting more murderball and less documentary but this still worked out very well. very funny at times and a little heart-breaking at the end. must watch. 5.0/5.0.

edit: one of the directors, the editor, and keith from the movie was there for q&a afterwards. very cool.

film festival: survival style 5+

Source: (http://imdb.com/title/tt0430651/)

stolen from festival copy:

Five fantastical tales of crime and mayhem intersect in this absurdist Japanese comedy that has more inventive storytelling and surreal imagery than a dozen Miike movies.

Wow. Cynics who think that cinematic storytelling has reached a dead end should sit themselves down in front of the mind-blowing and imaginative Survive Style 5+, a Japanese crime comedy that despite some post-Tarantino story elements actually has more in common with the inventive American comedies of the Kaufman/Gondry/Jonze camp. Initially the five paralleling storylines seem disparate, yet watching them ultimately intersect in inspired ways is one of the film's innumerable pleasures: a husband (the ubiquitous Tadanobu Asano) tries to repeatedly kill and bury his wife, but she keeps returning, even more indestructible; three young burglars break into houses and get into trouble; a London hitman travels through Japan with his interpreter/employer, continually asking people what function they serve in life; attending a hypnotist's performance with his family, a salaryman becomes permanently convinced he's actually a bird; and a driven advertising director has to reexamine her life after her increasingly hysterical ideas for television commercials are rejected. First-time feature director Gen Sekiguchi actually was Japan's leading (and award-winning) director of commercials, and he brings a stunning visual style to the film (the production design makes Wes Anderson's films look like social realism) as well as a completely boundless, anarchic approach to cinema's possibilities: you never have any idea where Survive Style 5+ is headed from minute to minute, and the trip is as riotously funny as it is unpredictable. Like most wholly original films, Survive is a bit difficult to summarize, so just take our word for it and see it, OK? (Japanese with English subtitles) -- Travis Crawford

this was a great movie. very weird and unpredictable, let me tell you. very funny, a lot of wtflol moments. the art style and vision was wonderful, excellent camera work. it dragged on a little bit with slow pacing, i guess that's the japanese directing style, but it moved crisply between the storylines. i wish they tied up some of the storylines a little better though. highly recommended, 4.5/5.0.

Traditional Vatican turns to e-mail to announce pope's death

The pope's death marks the beginning of a carefully scripted ritual that culminates in the election of a new leader for the world's 1 billion Roman Catholics.

It starts with a formal deathbed pronouncement in Latin, that the pope is "truly" dead.

The Vatican's chamberlain, now Cardinal Eduardo Martinez Somalo of Spain, verifies the papal death -- which in the past was done by striking the pope's forehead with a silver hammer. The chamberlain, or camerlengo, then calls out to the pope three times by his baptismal name. When the pope does not respond, the camerlengo then announces "the pope is dead."

He destroys the symbols of the pope's authority: the fisherman's ring and the dies used to make lead seals for apostolic letters. He seals off the pope's bedroom and study, takes charge of the Holy See's property and arranges the funeral and the conclave at which the College of Cardinals will elect a new pope.

*shrug* |-| well who am i to judge?

it is sad to see the pope go. being only 24 years old, he was my first pope. seemed like a nice guy. didn't agree with everything though. wouldn't have minded playing some mario kart with him. his 1979 1 million person mass did take place a block from my apt which is kinda interesting. he'll be alright.

what the christ, leonard little?

Testimony begins in trial; Little facing up to four years

Little is charged with speeding and felony drunk driving as a persistent offender. In 1999, Little pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 47-year-old Susan Gutweiler in a crash in downtown St. Louis.

In that case, Little's blood-alcohol level was nearly twice Missouri's legal limit. Little later served three months in jail, four years of probation and 1,000 hours of community service. He also was suspended without pay for the first half of the 1999 season.

If convicted of the DWI charge, Little -- a Pro Bowl selection in 2003 -- could face up to four years in prison and another NFL suspension.

Little was stopped shortly before 4 a.m. last April 24 on Interstate 64.

so in 1999, leonard little killed susan gutweiler, a mother with a family. then last april, he goes drunk driving again. unbelievable.

what the hell is wrong with this guy? and where is the outrage?

120%: if he wasn't so good at sacking quarterbacks, he'd be in prison right now getting the butt sex.

Fifty-six players topped $100,000 for '04

There have been some rumblings in NFL circles that the Colts might try to pry restricted free agent tailback Brian Westbrook away from the Philadelphia Eagles. Even if those rumors were true, such a move would be difficult, since the Eagles have enough cap room to match virtually any offer sheet Indianapolis could make to the man who has become an offensive centerpiece. Westbrook certainly, though, has the diverse skills to be a big hit in an Indianapolis-style offense.

church and state are sitting in a tree...

Board allows Bible classes to continue

STAUNTON, Virginia (AP) -- Public elementary schools will continue to allow Bible classes during class time while the local school board conducts a one-year review to determine if criticism of the practice by some parents is valid.

you know, i think it would be ok if these public schools did this shit afterschool off school grounds as a voluntary program. but if you're doing this during school hours, then that's not right. and it's obvious that federal tax dollars are being used here in a public school to un-seperate church and state.

and why is it bible class? why couldn't it be judaism, islam, buddhism, or hinduism? or scientology? it's not like the christians have a monpoly on morality. i'd be cool with it if it was a general religious studies class that went over all the world's many religions. that would be kinda hot. i wish i had that when i was a kid.

it's all gold, baby

Belichick Devising Plan...

"I sat in on a meeting last week with Romeo and coach Belichick and, man, I could tell they were cooking up something big," he said. "There were charts and graphs all over the place. The chalkboard was full of all these crazy equations and theorems. And the desk was cluttered with all kinds of random stuff, like a book by Stephen Hawking, six Rubik's cubes, an abacus, some sort of engine and, for some strange reason, a blueprint of Donovan McNabb's home. I don't know what they're plotting, but I wouldn't want to be that guy right now."

Patriots Get No Respect

"When I asked him if he was going to watch the game, he said 'Yes,' but I don't think his heart was in it," said Harrison. "I figured he was just being shy, so I put my hand up to high-five him and he turned around and left. He left me hanging. Is it possible that he turned around before I even raised my hand and never actually saw it? Yes, I suppose that's possible. But a more likely scenario is that he was disrespecting me and my teammates. Well that's fine. That just motivates us more. Little Mr. Robbins will be on our bulletin board this week, and I'll be thinking about him when I go helmet-to-helmet on Todd Pinkston."

wok

my shack post

So when I was waking up this morning, I heard a short clanking sound from my living room/kitchen area. I didn't think anything of it because I thought it was my cellphone or construction behind my apt building. So I head into the living room to turn on the tv and check my email and stuff. I went into the kitchen to get a drink of water when I noticed that the bottom cabinet was wide open and the wok that I keep down there is now sitting on the stove on the bottom-left burner. :(

comcast dvr

comcast came by to swap out my digital cable box for a hot dvr cable box. it's a motorola 62xx series. so far it's pretty cool. $10 extra a month. i'm still getting used to the new remote. the numbers dialpad used to be up top where it is now below. it's like bizzaro remote.

i'm hoping this will make my tv watching more efficient. if i could record most of my shows for the week and watch them all in one day in a consolidated block, it would open up a ton of evening time over the week for me.

this is what i watch:

  • sunday: simpsons, arrested development, extreme makeover home edition
  • monday: 24
  • tuesday: house
  • wednesday: lost, alias
  • thursday: the oc

there's also mythbusters. and don't forget the return of chappelle's show on the 16th of february.

CHARLIE MURPHY!

p.s. looking over that list, i must look like a tv whore. i guess i am.
