Forty percent of city residents over age 15 are out of work and not collecting unemployment, according to U.S. Census data. One-quarter of Philadelphians live in poverty, which can be difficult to escape.
Computers have become central to most city businesses, yet too many kids can barely read at the grade level for their age group, said Elijah Anderson, an urban sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania. Four of 10 public-school students never earn a diploma, according to a recent report on Philadelphia's dropout epidemic.

Over the next 14 years, Karnazes challenged almost every known endurance running limit. He covered 350 miles without sleeping. (It took more than three days.) He ran the first and only marathon to the South Pole (finishing second), and a few months ago, at age 44, he completed 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days, one in each of the 50 states. (The last one was in New York City. After that, he decided to run home to San Francisco.) Karnazes' transformation from a tequila-sodden party animal into an international symbol of human achievement is as educational as it is inspirational.

good game... probably 8-10 hours to finish? i'm hoping multiplayer is good. it's got co-op!
there's a trend lately with games to have a single player campaign be about 8-12 hours and you're supposed to justify the rest of your $60 with online/local multiplayer.
:/
zelda was kind of a freak: 54 hours of gameplay. that's pretty unbelievable now on a console.

After about five questions from different television and newspaper reporters, I stood up to ask mine.
Wait a minute son, this is for professional media only, Obama said to me.
What do you mean? I work for the local paper, I said with a crackling nervous voice.
Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were a college student. You have such a baby face, he said with an unremorseful grin.
At that point everyone in the room turned to look at me and laugh. The 800 people in the lobby laughed as my face was projected on the big screen.
Remembered that girl who I was trying to get with, well she was sitting next to me and guess what she was doing?
Everyone was laughing except me.
The next time I saw that young lady was at another press conference, but this time she was acting as if she never knew me. I think I saw her maybe two more times and each time, it was the cold shoulder.
Thanks to everyone's favorite new senator, I lost big time.
Obama owes me a public apology for making me look like a court jester and for blocking my shot.

While paying at the register, the man handling the Wii's said very loudly to the line full of people still waiting, "Sorry folks, that's it. There's no more for today." Instantly I started hearing groans and seeing other disappointing gestures. It was then that I realized the position I was in...here I was in line with all these tense guys who didn't get a game system and I did. All at once, I felt their angry, jealous eyes shift focus to me. To them, I was an easy target. But I felt confident that I could deal with angry Christmas shoppers. After all, there were still 2 weeks left of shopping. That's plenty of time to get a Wii.
"Hey, I'll give you triple for what you just paid..."
"There's no way you deserve that game system..."
"You probably don't even know how to play. Here, give it to me. I'll put it to good use..."
Were these people crazy?? Yes, they were. It only went downhill from there. While I was walking toward the exit, unsatisfied customers began to grab at my bag. Just like that! They were acting as if I was just going to give it to them. There was no way anyone was taking this away from me. I was caught off guard in a game of tug-a-war when a security guard intervened and rescued me from the chaos.
He took me outside. And the crowd followed.
The security guard flagged a police car. I thankfully jumped in. And it was a police escort for me and my Wii back to work.

We stopped by the Dedham, MA Best Buy this evening to see what was going on. Although there was no confirmation of any PS3s on premises, they did have a printout with a confirmed count of 24 Wiis. At 1AM there were only 14 people waiting outside, however three of them were willing to sell their spots. Alicia, Morgan and Norman are ready to give up their spot for $75. Alicia says, "As college students you're going to be doing stupid stuff anyway, at least this way we'll be making money off of it."

HEY, all you Chinese-speakers out there in TV land - Rosie O'Donnell thinks you should get a sense of humor! The Asian-American Journalists Association was fuming after O'Donnell went on "The View" Thursday and said that Danny DeVito's drunk turn on the show days earlier was "international news! In China it was like, 'Ching chong, ching-ching-chong, Danny DeVito!' " In a statement yesterday, the AAJA said, "We consider this a mockery of the Chinese language and, in effect, a perpetration of stereotypes of Asian-Americans as foreigners or second-class citizens. The use of the distorted phrases is insulting to the Chinese and Chinese-Americans, and gives the impression that they are a group that is substandard to English-speaking people." But a rep for O'Donnell said, "She's a comedian in addition to being a talk show co-host. I certainly hope that one day they will be able to grasp her humor."
"international news! In China it was like the sounds of silverware falling down the stairs and you'd hear Danny DeVito's name every few seconds!"

i haven't done any running since the marathon relay two and a half weeks ago. part of it is to let my right ankle soreness and left foot sprain to heal (both of these feel much better now). another part of it is that walking down stairs gives me pain in my left knee lately. i have no idea what it is but it started after the marathon relay. :/
probably some sort of tendinitis. i wish i knew a sports therapist.
i'm hoping it heals up so i can get back to running a little bit on the treadmill this winter. i have great plans to join the half-marathon tier next year.
p.s. i feel fat.

(these are adam's pictures.)
i did the marathon relay this sunday and it was a blast. three coworkers and i tackled the 26.2 mile course. i did the final 6.2 mile leg, miles 20 through to the finish line. that's from main street and green lane in manayunk to the art museum.
it was really cold but a glorious day for running. the fan support was tremendous. main street was pretty well lined with well wishers and cheerers. lots of cowbell ringing as if that would make us go faster. the final 1/2 mile to the art museum was like something out of the tour de france where you have 8 feet of "unofficial" running lane with cheering people on both sides. then you hit the fenced in part where it's wider but not by much. it was definitely an amazing experience.
i'm also really proud that our team stayed on pace the whole time. i was going for a 8min/mile pace but i lost that in the second mile where we had to climb two highway onramps. ugh. i ended up in a 9min/pace but i did finish really strong. i found a second wind with about 1/2 a mile to 3/4 mile left left where i was in a full sprint through the home stretch.
overall, i'm satisfied with my performance. i think i could've handled the second mile with onramps a lot better. i think i could've started my sprint a lot farther away than where i did. i could've dressed better too (track pants didn't work out too well). i think i had enough mushroom boosts leftover for at least one sub-8 min mile towards the end.
afterwards, i was really sore and dehydrated. my ankle held up ok and so did my toe injury from earlier in the week. i'm taking the next week or two off to let my feet and ankle heal.
next year, i may try hauling the 10 mile portion.

stolen from somethingawful:
Pre-order/Camp out FAQ:
Toys R Us: Began taking pre-orders on the 29th of October, but they aren't available now. They should have more stock than just their preorders though.
Gamecrazy: Began taking pre-orders the 20th of October. Don't camp.
Gamestop/EB: Began taking pre-orders sometime in mid-October. Don't camp.
Wal-Mart: Midnight on the 19th. Probably will receive a hefty amount of consoles, so plan to come early.
Best Buy: Usually open at 10 am, may open earlier to commemorate the Wii launch - call to check. A good camp out option.
Target: Will open at 8 am in celebration of the Wii launch - look below for specifics. Check to see how many Wiis your Target will receive. While this looks accurate and realistic I want to remind everyone that it is not officially confirmed that these numbers are correct so trust this site at your own risk.
Sam's Club/Costco/etc.: Lots of people had success with these types of stores at the 360 launch, so it's probably a good idea to check them out if you can. They're good because they require a membership so not everybody can go there, and most people wouldn't think of them as having systems.

(title link goes to official nintendo movies.)
the review embargo just lifted tonight and all of the overwhelmingly positive hype made me wii my pants a little:
1up
Now, two weeks before launch, the fog of mystery is clearing away. No crowded E3 tech demos; no we-play-it-for-you exhibitions. Just us, a Wii, and sheer Hyrulean excellence. We've seen only a tiny bit of the game so far -- 10 hours, to be precise, which is practically nothing given that Nintendo claims its testers needed 70-plus hours to finish the game their first time through. Twilight Princess features nine dungeons in all; after six hours, we were barely past the first.
That is to say, it's a big game. Huge, actually. In fact, the sheer enormity of Twilight Princess doesn't really strike you until after you've completed the first dungeon. Clearly, there's a great deal we've yet to see, but the most pressing (and frequently-asked) questions about Twilight Princess can fortunately be answered based on the time we've spent with it.
...
If Twilight Princess manages to uphold the level of quality seen in its opening hours for the entire duration of the adventure, it will unquestionably go down as one of the greats. Imagine Ocarina of Time, but polished and expanded and refined and generally perfected: that's what Twilight Princess feels like so far.

we're a horrible city filled with horrible people.
and look, there's even an interactive murder map! you can even sort by age and race! (would people would call me a racist if i pointed out that 211 of the 296 murders were black males? too late.)
all of us who have played simcity know that crime is a socio-economical problem and this whole murder pandemic thing will take many many many many years to correct (and full police department funding!). and there's a fuckton of causes and symptoms but no one magic silver bullet. let's see: our public schools are awful and our kids are apparently dumb. our police department is shrinking. we've got unemployment. there's guns everywhere. we have a street culture and mentality that embraces violence and police noncooperation. we have shitty civic pride, civic self esteem issues, and an inferiority complex to new york city. and our sports teams haven't won anything in forever and are downright disappointing all the time. one out of four philadelphians live below the poverty line. i also blame grand theft auto.
would more and better schools help? would more police officers help? would more jobs help? would citywide anger management and therapy help? would citywide internet help? would martial law help? would just one freaking championship help?
there's a magic affluent bubble around center city where none of those really affects those of us who live here. we read about the new daily death count online while sipping our chai teas and shake our heads before clicking on the next link blissfully ignorant of what it really means to us, if anything. meh.
the city is on fire, folks. and i can't wait for guitar hero 2.

well i didn't do the philadelphia distance run half marathon two weeks ago. i was nursing a pretty bad foot sprain at the time that took about 3 weeks to clear up. i definitely trained too hard too fast. then i had a cold that kept me down for a week. it sucked; at my peak condition, i was running 9 miles outside. there's always next year.
i was able to do the parkway run 5k on 9/24 though. i placed #425 with a little over 27 minutes. wasn't my best where i got a slow start with the crowd and i ran out of gas in the final 1/2 mile. it's amazing how quickly i lose my conditioning. that was for the children though.
if you remember from last year's parkway run:

Urban Dead is a free-to-play browser-based multi-player game where you play the survivor or victim of a zombie outbreak in a quarantined city centre, alongside tens of thousands of others.
In death, the city stirs. Its borders still locked down after a sudden government quarantine last year, Malton's trapped civilians make their way through the derelict buildings, surviving the winter to rebuild their fragmented society from the rubble upwards. Military cleanup squads patrol the empty streets, stationed in the city for the long haul, while embedded scientific groups continue the experiments that brought them here.
And the dead rise up and thrive, trailing through the ruined streets of the city, milling between buildings and clawing through makeshift barricades and diversions, reclaiming the city as their own.

Ausiello: What's this I hear about David Cross coming on as his Arrested Development character?
Braff: That's what I'm trying to broker. I'm a huge fan of his and so is Bill, and our idea was that he would play Tobias in an episode. Obviously, we have to get that cleared by a lot of people, like [Arrested creator] Mitch [Hurwitz] and Fox, but that was my pitch. David wants to do it.
Ausiello: Is it your goal to get the entire Arrested Development cast on Scrubs?
Braff: [Laughs] Yeah, one by one. I was such a fan.

from a gaming forum...
Well, the PS3 entry model is $500, not $600. 600 for the upgraded HD. But that is beside the point. My point is - look at those Tennis players heads - OMG! They are spheres! Vic20, Apple IIe sprites? Come on...my PS3 Tennis players will have grimmaces, sweat running down their faces, and strands of hair moving to real physics. Why? Because I AM a gamer. Not a pre-teen. I am not after bouncing dwarfs, discs, trading card games. Please do not confuse the two of us under the one term of "Gamer." The Wii is an alternative to the PS3. Yes. There are hundreds of alternatives to Ferarri, too. But given a choice, and within my reach...

got my new bed delivered today and got rid of the one that i've been using for decades. decades. it's something that i've been putting off for about a year but finally did this weekend.
i suppose that old bed was a part of me and it's a strange feeling to replace something so familiar that my parents bought a long time ago. it's that same feeling that i had when i bought my own travel luggage earlier this year instead of borrowing my parent's. it's my bed now. that thought is bewildering and exhilerating at the same time.
so the details of this bed is that it's a simmons wilshire of the beautyrest world class mattress family. i consider it a 15-20 year investment. it's got 2 inches of "pillow top" foam or something that makes it plush. it's queen sized so it's omg xbox huge lol. it takes up like a third of my bedroom. and it's so tall i may need a stepladder to get on and off. and god help me if i fall of it, i'll probably need to be treated for wind and atmosphere burns.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (Hardcover)
This title will be released on September 12, 2006.
"The Crisis" nearly wiped out humanity. Brooks (son of Mel Brooks and author of The Zombie Survival Guide, 2003) has taken it upon himself to document the "first hand" experiences and testimonies of those lucky to survive 10 years after the fictitious zombie war. Like a horror fan's version of Studs Terkel's The Good War (1984), the "historical account" format gives Brooks room to explore the zombie plague from numerous different views and characters. In a deadpan voice, Brooks exhaustively details zombie incidents from isolated attacks to full-scale military combat: "what if the enemy can't be shocked and awed? Not just won't, but biologically can't!" With the exception of a weak BAT-21 story in the second act, the "interviews" and personal accounts capture the universal fear of the collapse of society--a living nightmare in which anyone can become a mindless, insatiable predator at a moment's notice. Alas, Brad Pitt's production company has purchased the film rights to the book--while it does have a chronological element, it's more similar to a collection of short stories: it would make for an excellent 24-style TV series or an animated serial. Regardless, horror fans won't be disappointed: like George Romero's Dead trilogy, World War Z is another milestone in the zombie mythos. Carlos Orellana

i picked up madden 07 and burnout revenge on the 360. my thoughts:
madden looks phenomenal on the 360. i'm having a hard time adjusting to the 360 controls from the ps2 controls. i keep hitting 'y' which is to jump the snapcount whereas i think that it's coverage audible (coverage audible + right to realign the db's). and i keep hitting 'b' by accident which is sprint on the ps2 and is actually change selected player on the xbox. kicking is kind of weird this year. i need to get more practice in for reading coverages. running the ball is much better this year though.
burnout is really fun. i just started playing it yesterday and i've been enjoying it. it's definitely different from mario kart which is what i'm used to. burnout rewards aggressive and dangerous driving, ie driving into oncoming traffic. i'm still trying to figure out how to drift in this game without losing control. yeah good times.
i hope to get some points.

my foot sprain has been acting up on me the past few days. i think i might be out to the boundary of my physical mileage per week without injuring myself even more. it sucks but i think i'll have to wait to heal this injury after the half marathon.
i took it 'easy' today by putting in 90 hard minutes on the elliptical machine. i got to work on my conditioning without all of the impact of outdoor running.

so i had that scare with a stress fracture a while ago that was really a foot sprain that took me out for about two weeks.
since then i've been training for the philadelphia distance run half marathon. i think i'm where i want to be right now as far as conditioning. i've stepped it up to running three times a week with a disciplined program where i run shorter but faster-paced runs twice a week on a treadmill and i do a longer distance run outdoors once a week. so far i've been doing really well on it. this week, i'll be doing treadmill runs of 47 and 57 minutes and i hope to get to 9 miles outdoors on sunday.
one thing that becomes really important at these distances is taking care of your rehydration needs. i was going through tons and tons of gatorade every week until i ordered a few month's worth of gatorade powder online at the gatorade online store. the better you replace your sodium and potassium and lost nutrients, the faster your body recovers. or so their commercials and sports hydration specialists tell me.
also important is proper running apparel. like running socks. and compression shorts. yeah. seriously.
only one month left to go.

i got my xbox 360 hard drive today in the mail and snapped it on and everything booted up fine and stuff.
selected the profile recovery option to download my profile and stuff. waited a few minutes. profile downloaded and loaded and signed back into xbox live. a fellow goon sent me a message asking me if i wanted to graw.
yeah, it's like that on live. good times.
now i'm just re-downloading all of my games that i bought (hearts, geometry wars, and the graw expansion) and demos (dead rising)...
p.s. my rage against ups burns with the fire of a thousand suns. it actually arrived in philadephia on sunday morning, held it all monday, and finally delivered it today (tuesday). a thousand suns, i say!

Sometime between Friday night and Sunday morning, burglars broke into the headquarters of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in Ardmore and stole money, wristbands - and bottles of lemonade.
"You can't get more despicable than that," said Haverford Township Detective George Christake.
A security camera captured the dark, grainy image of four juveniles as they climbed onto a van parked at a loading dock behind the building, hopped onto the roof, tore off the window screens, and broke into the office of the organization.
The foundation was named for Alex Scott, the 8-year-old who died of neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, on Aug. 1, 2004, but launched a national fund-raising campaign for cancer research.
Once the burglars were inside, they pried open locked file cabinets looking for money. What they found was a jar of coins and a small amount of cash that children had dropped off Friday night from a lemonade stand fund-raiser.
When the burglars left, they also took bottles of lemonade and rubber wristbands that read, "One cup at a time."

The Boy Scouts of America will fight to stay in the city-owned building they have occupied since 1928, saying the City of Philadelphia has no right to force them to change their policy barring gay members.
"The scouts intend to stand up for their constitutional rights," said Robert Bork Jr., a spokesman for the national organization, which has a youth membership of about 2.9 million.
"The policy [against gays] is not going anywhere," Bork added.
Late last week, Mayor Street called for the local Cradle of Liberty Council to denounce the national policy, pay fair-market-value rent, or vacate the stately building it occupies at 22d and Winter Streets, near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

it came out in limited release this weekend so i saw it last night at the ritz. overall, it's not a great movie nor a bad movie; it kind of settles in that nook of a movie that didn't meet its full potential. at the same time, it's supposed to be super-authentic to the book's word and spirit. it's confusing and disorienting, but that's what it's supposed to be. i think the saddest part of this movie is that there's numerous scenes in the movie that are unbelievable but they don't sum up to an unbelievable movie. keanu reeves, robert downey jr, woody harrelson, wynona rider are so well cast in the movie and fit their parts so perfectly.
ign posted the first 24 minutes of the film, which i think is really cool and hope to see more commonplace.

my maximum range right now is about 5.4 miles outdoors. i had been training on the treadmill for 5k speed for the past few months but i guess i have to switch over to endurance training now. i still train on high inclines and will probably keep doing so for the strength.
i'm hoping to increase my range to 10 miles over the next 6 weeks.

here is what you do. you buy a baguette from the grocery store. make a sandwich or two but leave a little of the baguette leftover. put the remaining baguette in a bag for a day or two until it gets hard and stale.
dice the bread into croutons. put some olive oil in a bowl and add salt, pepper, oregano, garlic, and whatever else spices you like into the bowl and mix. lightly coat each crouton in your olive oil. put on a pan and bake at like 250 for about 20-30 minutes until golden and crispy.

all in all, it's been pretty good so far.
i haven't explored much of san fran this week because this is my third time here and i've pretty much seen everything. last time, i took like half a gig of 5mpxl pictures but i haven't really dont much of that this week. san francisco is still very much a great city and i definitely urge everybody to visit.
p.s. mobile java is going to explode in the next year. there's like a billion java-enabled cell phones out there and all that's left is a killer app to ignite it off. and from what i've seen so far, some very cool shit is on the way.

i'm here for the java one nerd conference. this is my second one. RESPECT MY GREEN ALUMNI BADGE.
4 days of mind numbing technical sessions about what's hot in programming and droll shit like that.
also, i'm never flying united again. their philly terminal sucks. my 6:14 flight was delayed until 7:40 because although we had a plane at the gate, we had no crew. and we didn't get off the ground until 8. so that means i didn't crash in san fran until 1:30 something est. i did catch the fastest taxi cab ride from the airport to the hotel though. we were pushing 80 something in one of those taxi vans. a few more mph and we would've activated the flux capacitor.
i only have internet at the conference so that sucks. hotel internet costs $12 a day. so frack that.

the best time was 21:14... most 5k winners are in the 15-16 minute area so that's a pretty good indicator of how tough this one was. the first mile was mostly uphill and i burned myself out too fast there on a quick 8:30 pace. the second mile had a few climbs and i lost a ton of time on a ~12 minute pace. the third mile was mostly downhill and i picked up a lot of time and energy for a final sprint.
my final time was more like 30:30, according to my clock. more training to do!
p.s. fuckers typo'ed my last name and lost my age.

i heard this song last night and it's still in my head... i ended up listening to it a few times at work today.
this song has a strange hold on me. i suppose there's relevence.
God that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said 'yes I think we've met before'
In that instant it started to pour,
Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across pont champlain
And all of the time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name...

Given that EA has dedicated a specific group to Revolution development, it stands to reason that the game will take advantage of the console's unique capabilities. While many details will have to wait until E3 kicks off, GameSpot was given an advanced scouting report which said that the gameplay will make extensive use of the Revolution controller's motion-sensing capabilities.
Players will hike the ball by mimicking a quarterback receiving the ball from the center, and then pass it to a receiver by making a throwing gesture with the free-hand controller. The faster the passing motion, the more of a bullet pass it becomes (in previous Madden editions, bullet passes were made by holding the passing button down longer).
Kicking the ball will be accomplished by sweeping the controller up as if it were a kicker's leg striking the ball. A fast, level swing will make for a hard, straight kick.
The Revolution controller will also come into play when running the ball, as jerking the controller left or right will make the ball-carrier juke to either side, while shoving it straight ahead will make him stiff-arm the opposition.

run twice a week, total distance 6-8 miles.
if i run twice in a week outdoors, everything gets really sore so i usually don't do that. just once a week is fine for me.
outdoors: 2.2 miles up the parkway to fountain drive and then back. i usually just jog this because it's usually so nice and relaxing. i'm aiming to be able to do this in less than 45 minutes though. 4.4 miles.
indoors: 20 minutes running on a high incline treadmill and then a 20 minutes fast run on a moderate incline. i hate treadmills though; it's so boring and i'm afraid i'll fall off if i keep my eyes on the tv too long. this is roughly 3.5 to 4 miles. i've never lasted the whole 20 minute fast run though.
i'm hoping for a better time at the university city 5k. it's got a really interesting route that i've never run before. i think i liked last year's route better where they went from drexel u to roughly city hall and turned back around.
i have no explanation for why i do this to myself.

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC will launch a global interactive game based on the hit TV show "Lost," the network announced Monday.
Details, however, are about as mysterious and convoluted as the plot of the island castaway drama. The "Lost Experience" will be Internet-based and will feature a parallel story line that is not part of the TV show.
It will begin May 2 in the United Kingdom, May 3 in the U.S. and May 6 in Australia. There is no winning prize, but the experience will offer clues that could unlock some of the island's many secrets.
"It's like a giant, worldwide mysterious jigsaw puzzle that will come to life for all the world to solve," Mike Benson, senior vice president of marketing for ABC Entertainment, said in a statement.
What is known about the challenge is that it includes the introduction of new characters and the mysterious Hanso Foundation. The first clue requires finding a toll-free number that will be released during the show or commercial breaks.
Clues will vary by continent, so participants will benefit from coordinating their information. ABC said the game is designed to appeal to both fans and people unfamiliar with "Lost."

Bob Ross Inc. announced on Friday that the painting-made-simple guru would soon be immortalized in his very own video game. Sounds like perfect April Fool's fodder, right? Wrong. The untitled Bob Ross video game is being planned for the Nintendo Revolution, DS, and PC. The game has been licensed to developer AGFRAG who is currently searching for a publisher
AGFRAG's Joseph Hatcher promised, "The Bob Ross game will utilize the unique inputs that the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution have that can truly immerse the players while they learn to paint like Bob Ross." He added, "I want the community to share with us ... what they'd like to see in the NDS and Revolution games. We want to keep the brush going." Next-gen killer app, anyone?

i didn't know shannyn sossamon was going to be in it. i <3 sossamon.
anyway, it was a nice little movie. it was like a very off-kilter road-trip-esque comedy movie. funny but only because i find thick russian accents funny. it had its crazy universe and gimmicks. i liked it but it didn't really blow me away or anything.
also, will arnett, otherwise known as gob, was in the movie for like 5 minutes as the messiah. he was hilarious though. i imagined hearing the final countdown playing when he was in the scene.

usual suspects-esque movie with an all-star cast. a lot more violent than i thought it would be. good story though with sharp dialogue between all the actors. very funny. i would say bruce willis' line "you didn't think i would know? i'm a world-class assassin, you fuck-head." is my favorite.

Liberty Property Trust, which is building the 975-foot-tall Comcast Center, is seeking to change the building code so it can install the water-saving devices and have its skyscraper certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. The 58-story Comcast Center could save 1.6 million gallons of water a year with the no-flush basins, advocates say.
But the influential Plumbers Union Local 690 has blocked the code change because the urinals lack water lines and therefore require less labor to install. City officials have so far deferred to the union, which is led by Edward Keenan, a close friend of Bob Brady, the Philadelphia congressman who also heads the city's Democratic Party.

"Arrested Development," the critically praised but low-rated Fox show that won an Emmy for outstanding comedy series, as well as Emmys for writing, will not be resurrected on Showtime as rumors circulating for months have suggested.
A source close to the negotiations said that creator Mitch Hurwitz had decided after a lengthy period of debating an offer from Showtime that "Arrested Development reached its end, creatively, as a series."
Reached on his cell phone while filming a movie in Toronto, star Jason Bateman said he had mixed emotions about the news, saying he was sad for the series to end but happy that the beloved series will live on DVD for people to enjoy.
"I'm so proud of it and so like it as a TV fan that I'm happy we're not going to get a chance to screw it up," he said, in the deadpan style of his character, Michael Bluth, about the only sane member of the dysfunctional Bluth clan. "Our luck wouldn't have held. There would have been cast fighting. We would have messed it up."
"Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz says he will not be continuing with the series, throwing a major -- likely fatal -- monkey wrench into attempts to keep the Emmy-winning laffer alive for a fourth season.
Series producers 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TelevisionImagine Television had agreed on a deal to move "Arrested," previously on Fox, to Showtime -- assuming Hurwitz was willing to come back. In the end, however, a mix of creative and financial concerns has prompted Hurwitz to move on.
"The fans have been so ardent in their devotion and in return ... I've given everything I can to the show in order to try to live up to their expectations," Hurwitz told Daily Variety on Monday in a telephone interview from GothamGotham. "I finally reached a point where I felt I couldn't continue to deliver that on a weekly basis."

Based on the ABC e-mail, it appears that victims of hate crimes and violent home invasions and families coping with the loss of a child killed by a drunk driver make for good television. And the show would also absolutely love to feature those battling skin cancer, Lou Gehrig's disease, and muscular dystrophy. Oh, and families with multiple children with Down Syndrome would be ideal, whether the kids are "either adopted or biological," the e-mail notes. And, shooting the moon, the program's "family casting director," Charisse Simonian, would love to locate a kid suffering from Progeria, the rare condition that causes rapid aging in a child (for those unaware of Progeria, the ABC e-mail helpfully describes it as "aka 'little old man disease.'")

1. don't justify eating a slice of cheesecake because you worked out that day or whatever. one step forwards and one step backwards does not get you anywhere.
2. eat and drink in moderation. margaritas and some drinks are known to have like a billion calories. also cut down on the soda, cheese, candy, and bacon.
3. replace 3 meals a week with a salad. grilled chicken salad.
4. do 2-3 30 minute sessions of cardio (running, jogging, etc) a week.
5. add more fresh fruit to your diet. like apples and shit. a small lunch and an apple.
do this and you probably won't die in your early thirties (this means you, derek and scott).

Guys,
I'm sorry I gave inaccurate info on the cartoon.I was told on one end that the
TV show was a go but DXC enlightened me (with a hammer) that this was
not the case.I think there is a Futurama project as in DVD's but I appearently
had bad info. But I do live to give good Futurama news to people. So I must've
died or something.

Welcome Parker 151,
Thanks for your post! I hope you realize that this is your last--- naw, just
kidding! I'm glad that you got to see that stuff and you laughed.
I've talked extensively about this subject. Here's a little of the story.
All the stuff you see or hear from when I was on-- ended 11 plus years
ago. Some of the audio replays are from 16 years ago.I got out when I was
at the peak of my radio career. You rarely get a second chance to go out
on top like that.I was all done with it in 1995.I started in Boston in
1981.That's 25 years ago.I'm a radically different guy than I was then.But
it's so pissa' to see this ''internet arguement'' continue until people's
fingers fall off.I'm just tending my garden and when a few A-holes attack
me over this stuff,I just give 'em the old ''digitus impunicus.''
I'm thisclose to selling my show--''Billy Bastard--Amateur Human Being,''
And the other good news is that they're doing 26 new episodes of
''Futurama'' for TV and we're hammering out the deal now.The original
plan was to have the DVD's first but that's no longer the case.I'm totaly
jammed dude.
Greetings from the year 3000! It still sucks!
Billy

so i used to live in this apartment building in west philly that was pretty decent for undergrad and grad students. i know a lot of people who lived there at least once in their lives. it's like some sort of coming of age ritual or commonality that we all share. i still know a few people who live there.
anyway, there is this really weird guy who worked at the reception desk. he talked to himself, had a short temper, and from what i understand did an excellent job of creeping people out if you shared an elevator ride together. he also did an outstanding job of creeping out my exgirlfriend at the time. from what i understand, management gave him room and board if he worked reception. he didn't creep me out so much but i did always make sure my back never faced him when he was near.
so i moved on and i live in my center city building now and things have been kicking rad for like a year and half now. my building is full of young urban professionals and if anybody was creeping anybody out, it was going to be me. so everything's rad until like a month ago.
the first time i saw her, i was exiting the elevator in the early evening on the ground floor to pick up a package at the front desk. our paths were crossing when she entered the elevator and said, "have a great morning" and stopped right next to me as if she was waiting for a response. i was kindof dumbstruck because i was still parsing what she said to me at 6:30pm in the evening and was trying to find its context. so i just said "ok, thanks you too" and kept going. maybe she was just tired and said the wrong thing. i know i do that too sometimes at the end of the day so i just wrote it off as an isolated incident.
before continuing on, she's a late 40ish to 50ish woman. five foot two or three. diminuitive. really short gray hair. she kinds of reminds me the really early simpsons episode where the parents hire that woman criminal to babysit the kids. well obviously, she really stands out in my building.
so like three weeks ago, i saw her again in the gym running really slowly on the treadmill. she was wearing a button-down dress shirt, untucked, and a pair of denim shorts. she looked weird but she was giving it her all out there. a while after that, i saw her again downstairs in the gym on the treadmill; this time in a sports bra and denim shorts. gravity didn't do her right. i didn't appreciate the imagery of this sweaty 50ish woman.
a week ago, i was walking back to the apartment and i saw her jogging down the street in front of me in a dress shirt and denim shorts. the scary part was that she looked like she was ignoring the car traffic in the streets she was crossing. i thought she was going to get hit by a car and a few cars stopped right in the cross section to let her go. at this point, i'm like wtf. she crosses the street to the other side but then back pedals back into the street into traffic without looking. she jumps back on the curb and then back pedals back into the streeet a few more times. at this point, i'm like super wtf. cars had to stop. i was standing on the opposite curb. i'm the kind of person that helps people but shit, i wasn't going to jump into traffic to pull this retarded woman out of the street. she finally gets the cars' honking messages and runs down the sidewalk towards our building again. before getting there, she runs into the indoor parking garage next door, freaks some people out, and then runs out of the garage and finally into my building.
tonight, i was on the treadmill and she comes in and gets on the treadmill next to me. dress shirt and pair of jeans. seriously, wtf. anyway, she starts running and i finish up and get off the treadmill. i say "do you want me to leave the tv on?" and look at her. she didn't even hear me, she had her eyes closed, and she had her face towards the ceiling. i just walked away and left the tv on.
and then she killed me in my sleep and posted on my blog. seriously, wtf is going on here.

Theaters are trying a number of ways to silence cell phones, from sweeps by ushers to funny fake movie trailers urging viewers to shut off phones.
Fithian said owners were considering other steps if that does not work.
"We will actually petition the Federal Communications (Commission) to remove the block" on jamming cell phones, he said.

WHAT IF IT were your child who saw ruthless drug lords commit a murder?
Would you want him to testify?
That's what Assistant District Attorney Mark Gilson asked me this week, at the end of a stunning day in court in which one witness after another recanted earlier statements about the schoolyard slaying of Faheem Thomas-Childs.
Gilson said he was frustrated and angry - but not surprised - because it happens in homicide cases every day.
"They have to go back to the neighborhood with a big fat 'S' on their backs," he said of the reluctant witnesses.
They're afraid to be labeled snitches, Gilson said, and parents counsel their children the same way the father of the 18-year-old witness in Faheem's case did this week: Say you don't remember.
Then Gilson posed the question to me:
"What would you do if your son said he saw a murder and knew that the vicious gang in the neighborhood had done it?"
I assume Gilson was expecting the morally correct answer: I'd tell him to testify, of course.
But the truth is: I don't know what I'd do.
The larger truth is I live in a safe neighborhood that makes it unlikely I'll ever have to make that decision.

i guess it's been while since i updated everybody on my ankle.
i've been back on the treadmill since early february. at first, i had to take it really easy and slow with slow jogs. one mile. one and half miles. 2 and a half miles. i've been slowly climbing back to 5k distance and was able to hit 5k in early march. i still wrap my ankle in sports tape, just in case. right now i've been focused on incline training by running at 3.0 grade on the treadmill. 3.0 grade is incredibly challenging; my lungs are on fire and my legs ache around the midpoint of the run. i hope to conquer this by the end of the month.
i haven't run outside yet. the weather hasn't been warm enough quite yet. my night vision has been sucking lately too. and there might be some anxiety about running on the same surface that damn near killed me. there's still a month left until my first 5k run of the season.
it still doesn't feel quite right but it's getting better. here's to team ram rod!
p.s. i heard there was a friendly pool starting about derek's finishing time.

i've been wearing my etyomotics er6i isolator headphones at work since i got them on monday and i've been really impressed with how much sound they block out. of course it's really weird to push these things partially into your ear canal at first but i've gotten used to it. the hygenics is still kinda gross to me though.
anyway, they do a great job of blocking out noise and helping me concentrate at work. when i have them on with music, i can't even hear my cubicle neighbor when he's on the phone. fyi with these headphones, the noise isolation and music is about perfect at the 1/10 of the max ipod volume or so. the big test is for my flight to chicago in a few weeks and then my cross country flight later in may.
i'm no audiophile but i can definitely pick up on details in the music that i haven't heard before. with outside noise blocked, the music is much clearer and all those little instruments that i've never picked up on really shine through now.
are these worth $100? yes, definitely if you value your peace of mind.

new band to me, i've been listening to their new album "bitter tea" (which i don't think is actually released yet...).
my first impression that this is really weird. like white stripes + radiohead + bjork. i can only describe it as electronic-folk-experimental. it's definitely one of those albums where each individual track isn't very strong by itself but the sum is very extraordinary within the context of an album. and i can't imagine most of these tracks being radio-friendly either.
it really grew on me and i've really liked it once i got used to it. i'm going have to grab their earlier stuff. i wish there were samples or something somewhere i could point you to but i guess this older material is good for a flavor.

After aging out of foster care, 27% of males and 10% of females were incarcerated within 12 to 18 months. 50% were unemployed, 37% had not finished high school, 33% received public assistance, and 19% of females had given birth to children. Before leaving care, 47 percent were receiving some kind of counseling or medication for mental health problems; that number dropped to 21% after leaving care. (Courtney and Piliavin, 1998)

you leave your belt at home on accident, your pants are too big and you use a cat5 cable in place of your belt to hold up your pants.

i loved the winter games this year. i never watched the games this much (high definition helped) but i have to say that i'm a big fan now. torin, italy did a wonderful job.
there's so much history, comradery, competition, and young unknowns rising to the moment into greatness. it's so wonderful.
p.s. canada's iceman presentation thing sucked.

though last, it's great that he finished.
TURIN, Italy - The snow, which came down in a blinding swirl, was sticky and slow. The wax was all wrong, attracting moisture to the skis of Drexel professor Prawat Nagvajara in yesterday's 15-kilometer Olympic cross-country event.
And then there was the ski pole that broke with about 5 kilometers left.
It broke when he fell.
It was not his first fall.
"I fell a few times on the downhills," said the lone member of the Thailand Olympic team, who finished last.
"The Belarus team gave me an extra pole," he said.
And he finished, which was all he hoped to do, after not finishing in the 30K at Salt Lake City in 2002. That, and avoid being lapped, which for the most part, he also did.

my htpc (home theater pc, or media center) is finally finished for the most part. i like to call it my tv ipod. here's the specs:
amd sempron 3100+
asus k8n motherboard
corsair value 1 gig memory
samsung 250 gb sata 1.0 @ 7200rpm
evga nvidia 6800xt 128mb agp
antec overture 2
dvico fusion5 hdtv gold
lite-on dvd-rw
zalman 7700 alcu cpu heatsink/fan
arctic cooling nv silencer 5 r3
windows xp professional
i think it ends up to be around $900. i'm not too entirely happy with the case and motherboard i picked because it limited my other hardware options by a lot. the case ended up too short and i would've done much better with a pci-e motherboard instead of an agp.
i need to select which dvr/pvr software i want to use (not using windows media center) and whether or not i will install nvidia's purevideo decoder. i'll be connecting to the tv with dvi and the sound system by optical digital toslink. i might install a second hdtv tuner if i feel the need. the zalman and the nv silencer makes the system whisper quiet; i can hardly hear it which is freaking awesome.
so with this setup, i should get all the local stations in unmolested high def. when i say unmolested, i mean the signal is uncompressed and is in its full glory. usually, cable and satellite high def signals are digitally compressed before they are sent to your cable box so you're not getting the original quality. think of it as an original photo versus a gif or jpeg equivalent. so believe it or not, the free over-the-air hd signal is better than the hd signal you pay for.
i can record/skip/play shows like tivo. i get a full program guide. i can play dvds in 480p and 5.1 ac3. i can play divx/xvid/etc that i "download" from "places" on the "internet." and i won't have to pay comcast a dime.
i'll post pix soon.
